Photographer Christian Wolf safeguards precious photo assets with QNAP Turbo NAS TS-419P II
”QNAP Turbo NAS runs perfectly and silently in the background, leaving me with more time for creativity and allows me to concentrate on my work.” - Christian Wolf
Company Background:
Christian Wolf is a professional wedding photographer in Germany. Christian’s philosophy is to capture every facet and expression of people with his digital camera. Taking a picture creates a permanent record of a story at that specific point in time. With that in mind, Christian thinks of himself as playing the role of a story teller.
Challenges:
People have fascinated Christian from an early age. As a story teller and guardian of memories, Christian views file security as absolutely crucial to what he does. Ensuring people’s stories never get lost or forgotten, Christian has accumulated a lot of work and it is not an easy job to manage the associated data. At the outset, Christian used a single external hard disk to back up his date. One day, this external hard disk abruptly failed, many of the pictures were lost forever. This unexpected accident put Christian in a very awkward situation. Another problem was that the limited functionality of the external hard disk made it really difficult to communicate and share data with other people who shared his common interest in photography - as you can imagine, an important requirement for any artist. He needed a solution.
Solutions:
Christian selected a QNAP Turbo TS-419P II network attached storage product as the ideal solution. The TS-419P II is equipped with Marvell® 2.0GHz processor and features 4 hot-swappable trays. The product dimensions were perfect for his small home office, and the power consumption of the TS-419P II met his environmental requirements. Christian was particularly impressed by the broad compatibility and extensive functions of the QNAP solution. It helped to make the choice of hard disks and other peripherals very easy. The TS-419P II has integrated perfectly into Christian’s environment that includes two workstations, a notebook, iPhone and iPad. Christian also enabled PHP and MySQL to build a private Intranet for his colleagues and friends, and also set up data backup with remote replication via rsync to keep the data well protected.
As a professional photographer, Christian needs a titanic amount of storage space and backup support. He decided to set up his TS-419P II with four 2-terabyte drives so that he could use the redundant Ethernet ports for productive HP 1810 Switch to get the performance he needed. The TS-419P II’s impressive write and read performance was well recognized by Christian. Even if a replication task is running, the read performance can still reach 95% - 99% of the Gigabit network of his Photoshop workstation.Benefits:
“I can sleep calmly,” Christian said. With the TS-419P II as a strong, quick and reliable NAS system, Christian has more time for creativity and can concentrate on his work. In the future, he is going to use the Turbo NAS to manage IP cameras and monitor his office. He also plans to use Window Active Directory for advanced user privilege settings. All this enabled by his QNAP Turbo TS-419P II.
